The last year was great. Never got that Oramm report posted but had a blast. Spent three days riding in North Carolina. Alex finished the event after a few challenges in the 8 hour range, while I fought through a simple crash that ended up causing a DNF for me mid-way through the event with unfortunately located bruising. We do this for fun and fun we had!</p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjJQ-rb5HUrDOVn6IJYA09kRTCSHpc2MjmF9uNLf2BcFP1aIWRLCEU7UVCDEhDQQCjHzOG6GUh0Fmgolg2977hOhdFrL9MAlCn8r9TAwTubCQXPwsd-rQ40yEHwm2z-p6MT4lYWbbW5Ijmap498oNkaSKD5F7kvN6ydAlI7F1NvNMiYm7dTCYE8FIzxniE" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1440" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjJQ-rb5HUrDOVn6IJYA09kRTCSHpc2MjmF9uNLf2BcFP1aIWRLCEU7UVCDEhDQQCjHzOG6GUh0Fmgolg2977hOhdFrL9MAlCn8r9TAwTubCQXPwsd-rQ40yEHwm2z-p6MT4lYWbbW5Ijmap498oNkaSKD5F7kvN6ydAlI7F1NvNMiYm7dTCYE8FIzxniE" width="240" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Alex with some Podium Flex this year!</td></tr></tbody></table><br />Alex would keep the season rolling with decent success in the Coconut Cup Series, landing on a few podiums throughout the series and battling for Top 5 overall. Had a blast on the day and decided to put some MTB into strategy and go for a holeshot into what was the only line available for the first two miles to shell the group a bit. Successfully managed to not blow up and rode in a thinning lead group with Alex for about 26 of the 30 miles when the legs gave way. Alex stayed in the small group and came away with a 10th place and I managed a second win and chased back for 12th. <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj3_vW4kkRchRpAxjfWStr0KMjOSbInOo4t04G-zYYjvzNF6jX7fk9BaxOHGPisnbOqLXGxSq9oEjRTDdZXF1eNi0q0X5LikZ3KTk8x5s8SvrNVyIJpJlSjojnI1vL_Ei8Aeqv_WrIbz57i4OcLdJNi4nW6grr6jLrOQ5hSxg2ze7gQFe5FMkVBpNlF9Sc" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj3_vW4kkRchRpAxjfWStr0KMjOSbInOo4t04G-zYYjvzNF6jX7fk9BaxOHGPisnbOqLXGxSq9oEjRTDdZXF1eNi0q0X5LikZ3KTk8x5s8SvrNVyIJpJlSjojnI1vL_Ei8Aeqv_WrIbz57i4OcLdJNi4nW6grr6jLrOQ5hSxg2ze7gQFe5FMkVBpNlF9Sc" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Sprit of Gravel" all over the bike...</td></tr></tbody></table></p><p>Entering the new year Alex managed some more Coconut Cup success and I took a break. #Newbikeday for me in February got me back on the road and returned enough fitness<br /> into the Spring to dip my toes into a May Down2Earth home event and bring back some 2nd place hardware for the first time in ages. </p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjWt2pe0Os8DiEdJmHAs6GYpwekTvLliA2w9cRWERu21Skd7INnArdPZoEwyZ522w4Mb640T-3rNXXBnEMT8KK4ArrLQoAb6L70iXePCXi8WzK2LF2BQfwew62XopLtIlUnqj5R3ddRj4Kj0iUggxMawE0AAAG7IB2sDllbeCMmqlducHWgV4mMuFDgqgk" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="908" data-original-width="1210" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjWt2pe0Os8DiEdJmHAs6GYpwekTvLliA2w9cRWERu21Skd7INnArdPZoEwyZ522w4Mb640T-3rNXXBnEMT8KK4ArrLQoAb6L70iXePCXi8WzK2LF2BQfwew62XopLtIlUnqj5R3ddRj4Kj0iUggxMawE0AAAG7IB2sDllbeCMmqlducHWgV4mMuFDgqgk" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I still remember the proper Podium Pose!</td></tr></tbody></table><br />That's been about the last of our season so far in 2023. After laying low in recent years, with the Covid Pandemic finally moving past us, we got excited to get back in the swing of racing and for our primary goal as ORAMM in July. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgZRNF0nW8a-_vJJ85kA3_b1SG7RHm5Y5kmn82CgDvODyUD9M9jRF_eN2CKr9Dp4mXt5lxGtBrMhn4Mq7aS1FCJiiyi-ocyvYFgNW56mqEgDC-YD3M1SIxzMq4grF6hU9daZ5hFqaccPbHKDDhSCT8UM-EfagfC9exsHxqqWF7ZDTipOhlbmkMeLN0A" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="914" data-original-width="1219" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgZRNF0nW8a-_vJJ85kA3_b1SG7RHm5Y5kmn82CgDvODyUD9M9jRF_eN2CKr9Dp4mXt5lxGtBrMhn4Mq7aS1FCJiiyi-ocyvYFgNW56mqEgDC-YD3M1SIxzMq4grF6hU9daZ5hFqaccPbHKDDhSCT8UM-EfagfC9exsHxqqWF7ZDTipOhlbmkMeLN0A" width="320" /></a></div>First up in February was the 12 Hours of Santos (3 hour edition) After getting a taste of racing again in January's Bad Habit, we selected Santos as a first event to actually prep for. Chose the 3 hour edition to keep it fast and fun. Alex would dust off his race legs and come out for the first race in 3 years! I'd been dabbling at the fun events over the last 2 years, but this was first serious effort to prepare for an event. The 12 Hour Santos Event is one of the biggest events in the State of Florida due to typically perfect weather and a great course. Racers typically camp on the grounds and make <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEheuwV6e8vSGCrXGd3rAbhGpuIQ0BZO2dkp_udS7DqBHwTHeyRiuyAbVgrhRFGxxO66YYKWhwnoAnDMYUl7ineYyNSGFN4asnIRPrAmpRMSoF9UbX4IIS648wy-NWjF79SEgBz0-Kw7cDqKrOLYGrXVS7tj_9jtrf7kUIFVwG2bI-0xrCHSxkZhoRtN" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="914" data-original-width="1219" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEheuwV6e8vSGCrXGd3rAbhGpuIQ0BZO2dkp_udS7DqBHwTHeyRiuyAbVgrhRFGxxO66YYKWhwnoAnDMYUl7ineYyNSGFN4asnIRPrAmpRMSoF9UbX4IIS648wy-NWjF79SEgBz0-Kw7cDqKrOLYGrXVS7tj_9jtrf7kUIFVwG2bI-0xrCHSxkZhoRtN" width="320" /></a></div><br />it a great riding weekend, so that's what we did! The race itself was came and went quickly as the course consists of 3 flow sections divided by two twisty, punchy, techy sections. Put out some decent efforts and kept the rubber side mostly down and had some solid feelings at the end of the day to know that ORAMM was going to be attainable!<p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>Next up was the Hialeah Hustle, a 60 mile event at Amelia Earhart Park and one of my home events. If Santos was the tech course, Amelia is the flow, with basically 7-8 mile loops of fast flowing singletrack. Easy to go fast, but also easy to push too hard and pop. Unfortunately, the rance landed on what turned out to be one of the early HOT days of the year in April. I started with intentions of hitting the 60 miles, but 3 hours in, it was 11am and temps were already at 91 degrees! I had more in the tank but was definitely feeling the heat and decided to play it safe and call it a day at the half way mark. Saw many in the field with the same idea, and with highs of almost 94 that day, I didn't regret the decision. Didn't get race footage this day, but here's a taste of Amelia in the vid below!</p><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8xTqZsDdc7k" width="320" youtube-src-id="8xTqZsDdc7k"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Finally up, was ORAMM, but I'll give it a dedicated post as it's truly a great event. Will get that posted up next!<p></p>Eric Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11349216381888545992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916989703406329935.post-56624518679396150772022-01-30T06:59:00.006-05:002022-02-04T10:44:18.684-05:002022 is here and so are we!<p>Finally racing across Florida has been back in action for over a year now and we're excited to kick off our 2022 campaign, kicking off the year with Endurance races. Our main target is a return to Oramm in Old Fort, NC, (<strike>Whiskey Off-Road in Prescott, Az)</strike> and we'll be using some of Florida's toughest Endurance events to prepare!</p><p></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhG03VQ7F8VvqiSGWjLcQfXwRpKkCadTGw-wWo0giHwKZj0ni9lk8wJbza55rmzSXEF2c1IO8rFkPDh-noVGi00QYU9vIGWyx1YbXi_wleNxQD2plcOQuVbCscaD1k846Dg_7YcHjt8ZtSkQd88jqjmytX7kTTjSIcRp_DUxR9bvyuSnYofnK33Kteo=s1537" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1153" data-original-width="1537" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhG03VQ7F8VvqiSGWjLcQfXwRpKkCadTGw-wWo0giHwKZj0ni9lk8wJbza55rmzSXEF2c1IO8rFkPDh-noVGi00QYU9vIGWyx1YbXi_wleNxQD2plcOQuVbCscaD1k846Dg_7YcHjt8ZtSkQd88jqjmytX7kTTjSIcRp_DUxR9bvyuSnYofnK33Kteo=s320" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">2022 kickoff at the Bad Habit</td></tr></tbody></table>Eric here and a week ago we kicked off at the Bad Habit 4 Hour race at Markham Park. Normally beautiful Florida January conditions were swapped out for chilly 50s, wind and overcast skies for the entire day. I targeted the race for early season fitness and wasn't too disappointed. My racing skills on the otherhand were a bit rusty. A nearly immediate pileup had my lane completely blocked and quickly passed by the large mass start group. 15 minutes of bottlenecks later, the course cleared enough to get on my pace. and ride a mostly otherwise uneventful race. My single lap pace wasn't bad, but overall I'm not ready to challenge in the Sport 40+ age group yet in these long events. Had a great time getting back out and seeing old friends though and even had the family show up and cheer me on which is great motivation!<br /><p></p><p></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiBLzb1SPAs_-3FTNVGbirEX29hupnKA6gSW_mdAi9duvM90Ev57QWi1ljNlmyfReetwI6ddLqHuR3o_4l3GjAnxfUHJU5OYLt6guztQfHCopBWTBJuMXs0d1MeYtfRKT5P4pHsH-cZ77MoBGuGSqk8sXkTkuGWMWfdQvQfcQOtC71hd4wG0Jwg2IMX=s1280" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiBLzb1SPAs_-3FTNVGbirEX29hupnKA6gSW_mdAi9duvM90Ev57QWi1ljNlmyfReetwI6ddLqHuR3o_4l3GjAnxfUHJU5OYLt6guztQfHCopBWTBJuMXs0d1MeYtfRKT5P4pHsH-cZ77MoBGuGSqk8sXkTkuGWMWfdQvQfcQOtC71hd4wG0Jwg2IMX=s320" width="240" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nothing like a family <br />fan club to push you!</td></tr></tbody></table>Now that we've started, I'm happy to say that Alex and Eric Norris are back and will join in the adventures once again! We've got the 12 Hours of Santos (3 hour distance) and San Felasco Endurance race in the early season calendar, but the big target is a return to <strike>the Whiskey Off-Road in April! Had such a great experience in 2019 I immediately said I'd return</strike> (Update) ORAMM and looks like 2022 is the year to make it happen!<p></p><p>Can't kick off a season without support and am excited to have continued support from our old friends. in no particular order, here are some of those that are helping us this season so far!</p><p>ESI Grips - What can I say about them? They're simply the best grip out there. Durable, GRIPPY and FUN due to the variety of sizes and colors. What's really been great about them is dealing with the family. After many years of partnering with them we took a step back due to our lack of racing, but when I reached out Anastasia she was more than welcome to extend support for 2022 again. </p><p>Rudy Project - Have loved wearing and representing Rudy Project for over 10 years and have always love their style and fit. Their glasses and helmets can be seen all over the Pro Peloton and Mountain Bike fields, and you'll see them once again on us!</p><p>Twin Six - Twin Six has been a personal supporter since 2014 and I simply love them. They bring fun an funky, American Made cycling apparel that's simply awesome to wear. There's many big brands out there, but Twin Six is family run from the USA and it's a pleasure to represent the brand. We may have team kits at some point this year, but Twin Six gear will be with us along the way. </p><p>GoPro - A recent addition to our supporter list and I don't think there's enough I can say about them. True pioneers in the action cam industry, GoPro has mostly led the industry since day one. I've personally used them for many years with various models, and the current Hero 10 Black is truly the best they've put out. With amazing quality and image stabilization, great battery life and a mobile app that makes footage easy to process and publish, the Hero really has become a product thats easy and FUN to use. Will be seeing plenty of footage from us using our GoPros!</p><p>That's it for now. The training is in full swing and looking forward to Santos in a few weeks! Thanks for following along another year!</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Eric Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11349216381888545992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916989703406329935.post-84074193243742579102021-10-04T16:32:00.002-04:002021-10-05T06:17:07.201-04:00Race Reports are BACK!! FSC #4 2021 - Markham Park Elite Men's Race Report<p>And we're back! It's been too long since I've had a race report for a Gone Riding event and glad to bring one along with pics!! So here we go!</p><p>FSC #4 which doubles up as Coconut Cup kickoff race was supposed to be my return to midpack Cat2 glory! The weather leading up to the weekend was spotty with showers closing down the trails for a few days, but by Saturday, the course was marked and FAST. Over the years Markham has developed into a perfect balance of speed and flow sections, while maintaining enough technical challenges to develop riders' riding skills when the trail shows it's teeth. The combination has lead to a race loop with some of the fastest average speeds, and still retaining enough challenging sections to make it relentless. You're either pinned on the flats, or trying not to lose it over the many fast ridges and ledges throughout the course. See a quick highlight video of our recon lap below.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8I5-kxV8Yow" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></p><p>As for my race, well it didn't happen. Lots of prep leading up to this race, and I went and got sick late in the week. Woke up Sunday pretty congested. I'm Covid free but listened to the body and sat this one out, but I got tons of pics and got to pay attention to the race so I'll report on the always exciting Elite class!</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJmTLd1QnhjnIHYJ4iFm0tQ_wu5_yU-XYUnobBz62bM4UdTRldTpp0304PCbwq8_Vu_VMDSKtKr2Cl3uFv34tR5Gieq7NSpQ2oDU1ZhPqY-m8JxJkOEI9Mx9XtAdm9_yJ18aVZqlNLnoE/s4032/IMG_1829.HEIC" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJmTLd1QnhjnIHYJ4iFm0tQ_wu5_yU-XYUnobBz62bM4UdTRldTpp0304PCbwq8_Vu_VMDSKtKr2Cl3uFv34tR5Gieq7NSpQ2oDU1ZhPqY-m8JxJkOEI9Mx9XtAdm9_yJ18aVZqlNLnoE/w400-h300/IMG_1829.HEIC" title="Too sick to smile" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Too sick to smile</td></tr></tbody></table><br />For the better part of the 13 years that we've been involved in the South Florida racing scene, two names have always raised eyebrows when they've lined up together, Bob McCarty & Ryan Woodall. While there's been and still are many long time fast Florida Elite racers, seeing those two line up means it's going to be as fast as it can get. While they may be over a decade apart and in age, their speed, skills and consistency rarely creates more than a few seconds difference lap after lap. On this day, 28 riders would line up for the Elite 19-49 field for 4 laps of Markham. <p></p><p>The field was off and set a blistering pace led by Victor Alber, another long time Florida fast man, out front early in the singletrack through the flowing Redback section with the majority of the field in tow. On lap 3, Bob would use his home course knowledge and strike first and strike hard. He managed to jump into the singletrack, and it's little passing room, first and put some riders in between him and Ryan and pin it like only he can at his home course. Coming out of the Outback section and around the far side lake he'd gained a small gap on the field with Troy Davis sprinting to stay connected. Victor Alber would be chasing 5 seconds in arrears, with Woodall and one more racer in tow another 5 seconds back. The rest of the fields would continue the charge, but any cohesion they had as a group was blown apart by the pace. Exiting the Bermuda Triangle Section, McCarty held a 5 second advantage on Davis and stretched it out to 20 over the duo of Alber and Woodall. Exiting the trail I'd see Woodall stand up and set a hard chase onto the short fireroad section approaching the finish line. While things slowly opened later last year, Florida racing is now in full swing with safe protocols and fun Mountain Bike events. Having been away from racing for nearly two years brought back the passion that made the hard work fun. Slow, solo, aimless riding just to escape from the mundane daily pandemic lockdown life, has turned into training days, remembering how to apply technical handling skills and ultimately, modest fitness and a race calendar! <br /><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJNsklX-j460P3OwNo6NaoGqsm7KcCbFsnioxLE2-KGC2p0FRvqb5D0Vq7CRSxgZNtO17ZtmLkm41zCMqZqo_VbvapaYyd9SIJIUgOTbLzx7okQdul4UTj540QsjEHYmBDrids1W9VMz8/s4032/IMG_1560.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJNsklX-j460P3OwNo6NaoGqsm7KcCbFsnioxLE2-KGC2p0FRvqb5D0Vq7CRSxgZNtO17ZtmLkm41zCMqZqo_VbvapaYyd9SIJIUgOTbLzx7okQdul4UTj540QsjEHYmBDrids1W9VMz8/s320/IMG_1560.HEIC" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Weather is providing great training days</td></tr></tbody></table><p>Summer was spent building enough form to dive in to a few Endurance races to see if my reinvigorated spirit was really ready to dive into a race calendar with mixed, but positive results. Started in early August with one of the biggest South Florida events of the year, the Rumble in the Jungle. It's one of Markham Park's largest Trail Fund Raising events usually met with hundreds of racers. Not sure of the turnout this year, but it looked as big as ever. My prep for this wasn't particularly focused, but just wanted to get out and see some old friends and have fun in the scrum again. This one didn't last very long as the rust was apparent and after clipping a tree and briefly dislocating a finger (popping them back in is quite an experience), I decided to call it a day before I hurt myself more. DNF wasn't a great start. <br /><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsy6XU3b21D6SNEDvy-W0yiCU7HFbXOXk9aYe2Z-T6QDkjUs-pmeKqKv0JAqaQi4Q5-9X_z2vC2FKNBQf4bOuGeoMsfuHcJ37BaEcxfBIoFcOsnLNNZUkFvoUUdO7QDcbb0v7c4PHZg_4/s1121/IMG_1497.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="840" data-original-width="1121" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsy6XU3b21D6SNEDvy-W0yiCU7HFbXOXk9aYe2Z-T6QDkjUs-pmeKqKv0JAqaQi4Q5-9X_z2vC2FKNBQf4bOuGeoMsfuHcJ37BaEcxfBIoFcOsnLNNZUkFvoUUdO7QDcbb0v7c4PHZg_4/s320/IMG_1497.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Dusting off the Race legs at the Rumble!</td></tr></tbody></table><p>I wouldn't mope around too much as the Rumble was for fun and dusting off the legs. Next up would be a few weeks later at a Down2Earth 30 Miles of Amelia Event. Usually a smaller turnout, this would still be a good test of fitness and form. I focused on riding skills in the leadup and managed to ride as consistent as I have in ages. Was actually riding 2nd in my class until the last hour. I faded a bit after the 2 hour mark and ended 3rd on the day in class. Would have liked to have held on to 2nd, but was happy to take home some hardware before kicking into XC race mode. <br /><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Au4fDUEQ0hLn8BhbtPNgun9nB_zM-eG7yskXWabRTpcBHSlLOq1V3mDjdoU_ZnKp55rP82i6p0BHjZk8yxHOU-hI0FyQ9_0E46kWfksFVxLGMf678jPs9U0uLtjBgywXSSUJyUI5ZNY/s2000/IMG_1602.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1987" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Au4fDUEQ0hLn8BhbtPNgun9nB_zM-eG7yskXWabRTpcBHSlLOq1V3mDjdoU_ZnKp55rP82i6p0BHjZk8yxHOU-hI0FyQ9_0E46kWfksFVxLGMf678jPs9U0uLtjBgywXSSUJyUI5ZNY/s320/IMG_1602.JPG" width="318" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Started putting it together for 3rd at Amelia!</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>The rest of the year will shift to the Coconut Cup, the South Florida Premier XC series by Gone Riding. Fortunately "regular human" life appears to be getting back on track. People are getting vaccinated, learning how to stay healthy and beginning to get back out and enjoying life. We're in the same boat and after over a year of solitude on the bike the adventuring has resumed. </p><p>In non bike adventures, this spring took my family and I to a camping/adventure trip to Georgia and North Carolina, hitting up some of the places I'd only quickly seen on the bike. Made stops in Dahlonega, Ga, then Bryson City & Asheville in NC, and slowed down to explore the areas and had an amazing time. <br /><br /><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtOlxyQAQvionblG7uq_r-igfOld7lAjs1Hpgucq8t7x19Zrrc5XSoaf8wkm-bVGiwzmHVRgsYseXpOd_gm_xbamAk4E-pD29t1AsL_yHI6Uasib0DxWPukQRvHtjp7ygdRVV7lXmqfmM/s4500/P4272353.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3375" data-original-width="4500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtOlxyQAQvionblG7uq_r-igfOld7lAjs1Hpgucq8t7x19Zrrc5XSoaf8wkm-bVGiwzmHVRgsYseXpOd_gm_xbamAk4E-pD29t1AsL_yHI6Uasib0DxWPukQRvHtjp7ygdRVV7lXmqfmM/s320/P4272353.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Views of Lake Fontana</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA26tLnvH0MshaAt07usmrPxIrlBR_Vv9pVvAfCvPpyH_I9SER7-DDHkycgSMzYvo_N-_V6tiZ7RUOFtiFs4T3Rj3TRJiINPpyQU1xmXOcGoHABUVAir3Zs064mJdsGpCuC7lVdFuQUpc/s5184/P4262257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA26tLnvH0MshaAt07usmrPxIrlBR_Vv9pVvAfCvPpyH_I9SER7-DDHkycgSMzYvo_N-_V6tiZ7RUOFtiFs4T3Rj3TRJiINPpyQU1xmXOcGoHABUVAir3Zs064mJdsGpCuC7lVdFuQUpc/s320/P4262257.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Creek Side Camp<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYFFHKasD5blXg36czWJPCs5FxLS7efL3UMH0GOZp6RWT98BBEbS08nv_doQzlLvOKgsUbnf0qDXG1YRNPSqGypgfLIFwnsr_rxLQGy7YJsJ3wxtVYC6Q8qlmw480PS4oz-pr7H5FoVr0/s5184/P4262313.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYFFHKasD5blXg36czWJPCs5FxLS7efL3UMH0GOZp6RWT98BBEbS08nv_doQzlLvOKgsUbnf0qDXG1YRNPSqGypgfLIFwnsr_rxLQGy7YJsJ3wxtVYC6Q8qlmw480PS4oz-pr7H5FoVr0/s320/P4262313.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Adventure #Jeeplife</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As for the bikes, well that hasn't really stopped. From our camp I mapped out 30 miles of flowy single track. For those familiar with the area, we started at Shangri-La with the the Vortex as our targeted turnaround point. Man I forgot what a great place this is to ride. With mostly park based trails in SFL, the Ocala trail system is vast and isolated. You can go hours without seeing another rider. Unfortunately this was not the case, but trail traffic was mild in the two way trail system. The weather was slightly warm by end of the day, but considering the typical Florida weather at this time, it really couldn't have been much better with a cool start and clear skies. 30 miles later and we were back. In time to pack up camp, clean up and enjoy the most perfectly cold beverage before hitting the road. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4C-9LsfrxZSmg-eBE9EBP3vLXe4k0MIfp4bF3hkfDWhY1r5aMpZVqDKmElafFrS3Bzwmeh0-_0qR2sUUadqS9QK2UwRayyo7_D8PgAMaUcqIK2InvBnl9OQ9-WaiW3zEDdPeBA8KrUXw/s4032/IMG_0996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4C-9LsfrxZSmg-eBE9EBP3vLXe4k0MIfp4bF3hkfDWhY1r5aMpZVqDKmElafFrS3Bzwmeh0-_0qR2sUUadqS9QK2UwRayyo7_D8PgAMaUcqIK2InvBnl9OQ9-WaiW3zEDdPeBA8KrUXw/s320/IMG_0996.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ripping some singletrack</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG6va8PlP3t4jppocMfLuvZofSiLOxhXfO2zNkhr3fxFi1bnb0SNhJFzINa18ZTs3F8IKqZTRiAaVUC7aW02zph7IQQ3mMOK7YiG94pMqzP1nL3M4KvGxq97ul3_GaESr0iyFPxVcgBco/s4032/IMG_1001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG6va8PlP3t4jppocMfLuvZofSiLOxhXfO2zNkhr3fxFi1bnb0SNhJFzINa18ZTs3F8IKqZTRiAaVUC7aW02zph7IQQ3mMOK7YiG94pMqzP1nL3M4KvGxq97ul3_GaESr0iyFPxVcgBco/s320/IMG_1001.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">South Florida travels! Plenty of riding around, trying to stay sane, safe and healthy. Spending time with close knit family. Waiting for actual good news, instead of spin. At least "Outdoors" is still allowed, and now that hopefully this endless Rainy/Hurricane season has passed, we'll be able to get out even more. Biking and camping trips are in the near future, but like most of this year, nothing is guaranteed. If 2020 is the worst year of this generation, let's hope 2021 will be the best. <br /><br /><br /><p></p>Eric Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11349216381888545992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916989703406329935.post-68564754566979532852019-10-28T14:25:00.000-04:002019-10-28T14:25:54.787-04:00Race Report - Coconut Cup #1 Markham ParkTime flies when you're having fun! It's been a few weeks since the Markham opener of the Coconut Cup and it was a blast. Huge fields in all classes made the racing tight. Good starts and holding a consistent pace was critical. The race loop was carved out of the existing trails for a unique race day only course. More of a power course with few climbs but still constantly undulating terrain meant key was stay steady and don't pop on one of the temping wide open sections. So how'd it go?<br />
<br />

35 racers lined up at the XC2 40-49 line (HUGE for the class), and despite my early arrival to the grid, I was still starting 2nd row. The whistle blew and I never had a chance at a good start. Instantly pinched from both sides and a quick course bottleneck meant I had a lot of ground to cover to move up the pack before the singletrack. I decided to be patient and not blow up in the first two minutes. Settled in behind a group and would wait my chance to make a move. After five or so minutes of singletrack we hit the biggest "climb" of the day (More like 50 yards with gradual incline) and I layed down my first "match". Having been working on short burst efforts, I was curious to see how well they'd go. Turns out practice makes perfect. I punched it up this short climb and gained 4 spots and wasn't completely cracked! Kept rolling and slowly pulling for the group in chase of the next group. Hmm...maybe today would be fun despite this terrible start!<br />

</tbody></table>
The above is pretty much a synapsis of my entire race, unfortunately it would come at the expense of a dropped chain and a small crash throughout the course of the race. Nothing catastrophic, but always ill timed (are they ever actually well timed??) and would cause me to lose time and positions, then spend time and energy chasing back and waiting for passing opportunities. That said, it was actually kind of fun! Pace and endurance felt good all day. I'd lay down hard efforts on flats and power sections that normally I'm conservative on, make some passes then unfortunately go backwards. Make efforts and passes again. Fruitful it was not, but at least was engaging. Last 10 minutes I woke up enough to fend of another racer from my class to hold my lowly but hard fought 27th place. I'm nowhere near the lead but I know I have better results in me this season and can't wait to hit Round 2 in Alva in a few weeks!<br />
<br />
Speaking of season, we're ironing out some plans and big events for 2020. Whiskey Off Road Report!!Don't take anything from the HUGE delay in getting a race report up, the Whiskey Off Road was unbelievable! Lots to write so I'll get right to it!<br />
<br />
After what felt like talking and preparing for the Whiskey forever, the weekend finally arrived. The Town of Prescott, Arizona was 100% on board in support of the event. Upon arriving I could see the tell tale signs of mountain bikers present. Sweet bikes all around, Team and Industry Vehicles, and awesome personal transport options all over town! Along the town main street was the Bike Expo with many vendors including our friends and supporters ESI Grips! It was great seeing them again!<br />
<br />
Arriving early Thursday, we were happy to see my bike again after having shipped it a week earlier. Had some lunch at the pleasant St Michael Hotel Bistro, and then got to building up the bike. Everything assembled nicely so I'd be ready to preride in the morning. Jump to the next day and I mapped out about a 14 mile loop to shake down the bike, get familiar with the trails and wake up the legs a bit. Managed to make a quick vid on the shakedown ride so check it out below.<br />

<br />
Friday night arrived and as much as I wanted to just rest, the Pros were in action for a Fat Tire Crit, so we grabbed a beer and enjoyed the show. Got a few nice shots from there as well. Action was non stop and ultimately won by Keegan Swenson and Chloe Woodruff.<br />

The 8:30 start was perfect to take the chill out of the morning as we set off. The route started straight off into about an 8 mile climb, mostly road, some gravel, before topping off into steep and choppy section. The sawtooth profile meant that everything that went up, would go DOWN! Off I went on the first long descent and my smile was ear to ear. The open terrain allowed me to get a good look ahead and get comfortable quickly and actually letting it rip. My experiences at Oramm were a little hesitant as I wasn't comfortable with limited sight around the lush corners, but picking good lines on the new (to me) terrain wasn't a problem. The route carried on with another climb and descent until the first rest stop. Made it out of the rest stop refreshed and ready to tackle the longest, highest climb of the day.<br />

Exposed climb, temps and elevation rising, my heart rate going up and my power going down. I had to dismount and walk several times. I crossed the bail out point on the way up, but that seemed to give me a little kick and I continued to push. Reached the top, Took a breather and a picture to remember the long Skull Valley climb and carried on knowing it was only 20 miles mostly undulating downhill to go. In hindsight the elevation probably sapped my power a bit and I just didn't know how to handle it.<br />

Again with clear lines and lush trails and double track. 20+ Minutes of descending would lead us to the last notable challenge of the day, Cramp Hill. Sure enough, after not pedaling for 20 minutes the sudden short, but steep, climb instantly threw cramps my way. Knowing better I decided not to waste any more time and just walked up a few minutes.<br />

Once past Cramp Hill the worst was over. I'd ridden some of the final sections the day before and got my final wind once I knew where I was at. I pinned it through town to the finish line, and while I looked miserable, it was still one of the most enjoyable rides I've ever done. I met my wife at the finish and took some time to recover. After coming out of my haze, I took my free beer ticket and enjoyed the most refreshing beer I'd ever had and we sat back to enjoy the post race concerts!<br />
<br />
As a whole the Epic Rides Organization puts on what has to be the premier events in America. Great, supportive towns, excellent event organization, family friendly atmosphere and SICK RIDING. I've talked about it so much so that I may have talked the rest of the Eclipse Racing crew into attending Epic Rides' Grand Junction Off Road!<br />

2020 is a ways away, so first up is our Coconut Cup series. Enjoy the event pics below and come back for more stories!<br />

Alex is back in hiatus stage, so would just be me out this weekend. While Santos was just to test the waters and get back into live action. The Amelia 60 would be a true test of my progress and mindset to see where I really stood. 10 laps of Amelia are typically relentless on the body and challenging for the mind. The race loop was punchy or flowy, but you're always pedaling. Sometimes full effort to make it up a short steep climb, others pedaling at tempo at the endless flowing fast turns. Easy enough to recover, but sneaky enough to burn out your legs as the laps wear on. Add passing the pit area 10 times, and any doubts can be magnified where you could just say "enough" if you're having a bad day. The goal was find my pace and ride my own race. Don't blow up, don't cramp, focus on nutrition and hydration and don't quit.<br /><br />

<br />
Race start came and I wasn't worried about positioning. I knew there was a mix of teams and open riders that were going to be on a much faster pace than me. As we got started I settled into a train of smooth riders I was familiar with for the first 10 minutes or so. We made it past the challenging opening sections and into the flow when a bottleneck from catching some slower riders caught me at the worst time, and I was forced to bail mid climb and ultimately tumble down the hill. I popped up quickly and got rolling again, but the train was gone and I was solo. I didn't worry too much about chasing back, but I was regretting my decision to start off easy. Maybe next time I'll press a little more to get ahead early.<br />

<br />
After the fall I found my pace and was pretty pleased. Lap after lap I was ticking times all within one minute of each other. About two-thirds of the race had passed when I finally started slowing. At the start of lap 7 I was getting some heavy legs. Good thing was that while the pace was down, I wasn't struggling to get around the trail. Kept chugging along, knowing I was close to the end. Realistically I had 9 laps in me as the team leaders had already passed me earlier. I knew it would be close but I was determined to make it to lap 9. Unfortunately I wasn't determined enough apparently. Good friend Damien Serrania came blasting by not even two minutes from the end of the lap. Cutoff for the race was determined on the overall winner. Once they were done, everyone was done when they finished their lap. Guess who the race winner was? Damien and his team. I watched him cross the line and came though behind him seconds later, and had Dave from Gone Riding telling me I was done. Just missed it....<br />
<br />
Finished with 48 miles on the day. Could I have ridden with a little more urgency? Possibly, but the fitness was there and I'm looking forward to the next 6 weeks. Thanks to Jonathan Perez from @playing_bikes (Your Custom Pactimo source!) for letting me pit in his tent space too! Next event will be the big one in Arizona. I'll try to get more pictures and videos for that one. Stay tuned!Eric Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11349216381888545992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916989703406329935.post-85365150866488969762019-03-01T10:50:00.002-05:002019-03-01T10:50:24.947-05:002019 in Progress!If you've been following along on with us on Facebook you'll know 2019's major goal is the Whiskey Off Road in Arizona! 50 miles in the beautiful Arizona desert terrain with close to 7000 feet of climbing? Sounds like a dream to me!<br />

<br />
When the decision was made in December, we had to get right to business adding the Santos 12 Hour event to the calendar. The February timing was perfect as would have a few weeks to start preparing. Having ridden the trails but never been to the event, I heard it was half race and half party. We'd be camping out at the venue and only racing the 6 Hour event so we'd definiltey have plenty of time for shenanigans.<br />
<br />
The race started off LeMans style with a 300m dash to our bikes. I managed to find a well placed and firm vine to prop my bike up, but it was a bit further down the row. Alex would set up his bike in a perfect spot a the start of the bike drop. Who's strategy would win out?? The run started straight up an incline so I didn't have any reason to go all out, but I did manage to ultimately hop on the bike in front of Alex, but only by two riders! We settled into the madness of a mass start and tried to stay out of trouble.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/q-BbnpgT5Fg" width="560"></iframe><br /></div>
<br />
After a short opening loop, the 9 mile course would break up into a technical section with short punchy climbs that would simply kill the legs, then fast and flowy for a few miles, followed by a milder technical and choppy section into the finish area. A flaming boost jump is traditionally added for fun along the pit row by spectators, adding a final challenge at the finish line. It's completely optional, but race time bravery often gets people out of their comfort zone. The jump is quite simple and small by MTB standards, but it's still known to catch a tired rider out with silly crashes. Gotta pay to play sometimes, right? Luckily I survived each attempt unscathed. My modest jump style drew courtesy applause, but they definitely weren't going to remember me.<br />
<br />
Fast forward to 3 hours in. I was cooked. Legs didn't really have the miles for the event and started cramping. I went out to start a 4th lap and nearly stalled going up two power climbs at the beginning of the loop. At this point it wasn't safe and I called it a day. Alex had shown up just for the fun and riding so he wrapped up slightly earlier in the day. Fun was had. Solid training on the day and came out unscathed. Time for camping, cooking and recovery beer!<br />
<br />
We enjoyed the event and will definitely come with more focus again next year. Took a few pics and vids, not a ton, but enough to get a vibe for the great event. Up next is the Amelia 60 in March. Training has been progressing so expecting better results out of this one! Come back soon for more updates.Eric Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11349216381888545992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916989703406329935.post-78139421157355873862018-09-12T11:29:00.001-04:002018-09-14T08:37:11.464-04:00So now what?<div style="text-align: left;">

After the long leadup and drama going into Oramm, the weeks that followed were due for a little relaxation off the bike and figuring out what to do for the rest of the year. Not wanting to waste quite possibly the best fitness we've had in a few years, we've decided to hit the XC scene and get back to our roots in the Coconut Cup! We're looking forward to seeing old faces and meeting new ones in the great Florida MTB Community. The action begins in October at Markham park so keep following with us for pics and stories of the events. Can't wait!!!</div>

To say getting to Oramm was a challenge is a huge understatement. The whole goal was set after a shoulder injury & subsequent surgery in 2017 had me so out of shape I decided to get the Eclipse Racing gang back together and go big, and Oramm was the target. TLDR Warning, it's a long report!</div>

Then had a spleen issue a few weeks later. Then had chest pain symptoms that turned out to be</div>
caused by gastritis. All of which were serious enough to knock me off the bikes for a few weeks at a time. The hits just kept coming, but despite the doubt and lost training time, I was able to focus on the bike just enough to drop 20lbs and get some effective training done with Freddy from F2 Performance Lab. Alex meanwhile cranked away for months like he hadn't done in years. An Oramm veteran, Mike was taking a relaxed approach to his prep as he knew what would be in store for him and his SS setup.<br />

What a great time we had! Coming from Miami, FL means 12 hours to Old Fort, NC. We decided to leave on Friday and stop in SC to hit up the FATS trail system. Man what a blast we had. We kept it easy on the Brown Wave and Skinny trails which are mostly flow trails and just let it rip. Didn't want to hammer any climbs, just wanted to have some fun and break up the drive. We wrapped up the drive to Asheville, NC and called it a night after dinner.</div>

Saturday was preride day and Boyco gave us the low down. Rather than over doing it trying to get familiarized with every possible section, we focused on the Kitsuma trails as we'd hit them twice in the main event. After some final bike adjustments and getting lost a little bit, we started the road climb to Kitsuma. With month of long steady efforts, but no real climbing I was curious to see how the climbing legs would show up. I was pleased with my 2x10 gear selection and thrilled I'd dropped so much weight. The legs felt great and I was able to match what we'd trained in an actual climbing situation. Compared to my prep for Fool's Gold in 2014 I was thrilled with what was to come. Taking it easy we hit the singletrack section and all it's switchback glory about 30 minutes later. The steep turnarounds took some getting used to, but we figured out a rhythm and grinded to the top. Then the fun started. Not having hit "real" downhills in many years I eased into it making sure I wasn't going to fly off the bench cut trails. Was just getting comfortable when some rear brake squishyness reared it's head. Nothing like 50% stopping power to shake the nerves.... I adjusted the lever a bit and improved it, but my confidence was shot and I kept it slow going until we hit the bottom. We gathered up and after some relaxing and beverages, we hit an Asheville shop who was kind enough to try to fix my brakes. They didn't quite have all tools needed for a proper bleed, but they felt better so I hoped I'd be set. </div>

We arrived a little later than planned but managed to make the start line with only minutes to spare. Unfortunately Alex was fighting some stomach issues from the day before and had to take care of business and missed the start. Boyco rolled in without a care in the world. I was jealous....We rolled off and I quickly wound up in no man's land. Wasn't able to keep up with lead group cold, and was ahead of the 2nd group that was really easing into it. After about 10 minutes of rolling we hit the climb. I set into my power range and went for it. Pace was decent for me but was getting reeled in by more comfortable climbers. ALL the Boycos passed me! Mike, his dad and even his little brother! (Ah to be 15 and skinny again...) I kept my focus and made it to the top feeling good. Now on to the fun descents. I felt comfortable quickly for the first 10 minutes and managed now to slow people up, then the brake fade returned and I had to pull over. Fidgeted with brake reach a few times, then eventually crawled to the bottom safely. Was making another adjustment when Alex came roaring by trying to make up on lost time! I got the brakes to where I was happy again and off I set to chase down Alex.</div>

The flat road was a nice change as about the only thing I was used to! I pushed the pace a bit and had a small train latch on my wheel, having me second guessing that I may be going too hard, but I was feeling good so I kept at it. We hit the next rest stop and there was Alex so I topped off bottles and grabbed a few munchies quickly and off we went. Now started the never ending Curtis Creek climb that I'd been warned about, and lived up to it's reputation. This thing was just and endless grind. Not much to say here, just find your climbing rhythm and hold it for over an hour. Made it to the rest stop at what I thought was the end of the climb, only to find another few miles of road to climb on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Beautiful views and all, I was ready to start pointing down. Before that came, there was a gnarly hike a bike to take care of. A few minutes later and it was finally time to let it rip down the appropriately named Heartbreak Ridge. Somewhere along the way Alex and I were back together again heading into the decent. Admittedly I walked a ton of the early sections. Huge rock sections and iffy brakes didn't really have me gleaming with confidence. Finally found the brake reach that gave me maximum stopping power that I could still reach with one finger and finally got rolling consistently. This was the longest downhill I've ever ridden! I took the chicken line but I was committed, but unfortunately slipped on a root near the bottom and had a small tire burp and had to put my foot down, setting off the Hecklers howls! All in good fun, I carried on. </div>

Having survived the toughest section of the race feeling good despite the brake delays. I knew there was about 90 minutes or less to go and I had finally resolved my brake issues, I got my last wind. I knew we'd have a steady climb back to Kitsuma, so I set into my pace while trying to conserve some energy for the switchbacks. Somewhere along the way down, Alex damaged a pedal and was slowed down a bit, so here is where we parted ways. I made it to the switchbacks, and while my steady effort power was hanging in there, the intense power needed to make it around the switchbacks was mostly gone. I'd make it around a few bends then need to stop and recover, or walk around the bend. Took a little longer than the first time, but I made it, only this time, I had brakes going down! Finally I was able to let it rip and tried to pin it down as best I could. Made it to the bottom safely and saw Freddy with some words of encouragement and a splash of cold water telling me there was only a few miles to go. Knowing it was easy rollers to the end I rode with a grin from ear to ear as hard as I could go to the finish. Alex came by about 10 minutes later. Broken pedal, stomach issues and all, he was grinning ear to ear as well crossing the line. </div>

Considering the rough journey I had to make it to Oramm, finishing was enough for me. Clock time was slow due to mechanicals and stopping a little tooo long at the stops, but my riding time was reasonable for my expectations so I came out of this thrilled. I joined the Boycos and Alex with a traditional dip in the cold stream nearby and a cold beer and reminisced about what we'd just been through. Knowing that this year's course was about 10 miles shorter than usual, we'll definitely be back to conquer Oramm in it's entirety soon! Time to take a few weeks off and plan out the rest of the year. Once again we'd like to thank Freddy Viera with F2 Performance Lab for getting us prepared for this event. Enjoy some pics below and keep following along!</div>

That's what I wrote a few weeks ago prior to Hammerhead, and that's when things got weird....About three weeks ago I wound up in the ER, TWICE, for heart attack symptoms!! Turns out I apparently had the WORST heartburn I've ever had. Never felt anything like it. Some people tell me that they have these sensations all the time. Well, it was a first to me and FREAKED me out. Luckily the ticker has been given a clean bill of health and I'm back on the bike. Dealing with gastric issues still but I'm able to train at least. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Bad news is schedule is all but wrecked. Missed all the early season races with the crash, and missed Hammerhead. All that's left is Fakawi and a VK40 for events, so Oramm prep continues, albeit in grind it out long ride format mostly. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Won't let this recent bad luck keep me from #Oramm2018 though! Been training too hard and getting back into shape to miss out. Keep following along to see if we (or even me) make it though!</div>

First off, Happy New Year!! We kicked of the 2018 comeback season this Sunday at the Markham 360, an annual 6 hour event at South Florida's famous Markham Park. The course was a challenge as always with various reroutes that made you feel like you were in a completely different trail system, but still a blast. Having been in racing hiatus since the latter half of 2016, this was the start of our ORAMM preparation campaign. While Boyco was out for a leisurely 200k+ road ride, Alex and I lined up with the goal was simply get out, test the legs, have fun, work on pacing, and staying safe. It ALMOST worked out that way...<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Great to race again, even if for a bit!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The main strategy was not to blow up like I tend to do during endurance events, and not to let Alex beat me, as he always does when I blow up. For the first two hours, it was going great and I was looking forward to continuing as long as I could. Pace was consistent, all laps were within one minute, and I hadn't seen Alex since lap 1 :) On lap five though, I proceeded to clip a small stump/root on quite possibly the flattest section of the course, lose my grip of the bars, slid off the saddle, and surf the top tube with my chest on the handlebars until i finally was catapulted from the bike, ONTO a downed tree, square on my lower back. Good thing is I completely cleared my head and previously injured shoulder (wasn't bike related!), but I knew I wouldn't be mounting the bike again that day.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Landed on this bad boy!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This was probably the biggest hit of my life. I was down for a bit, able to breath and move fine but afraid to get up alone. A few riders passed and asked if I was ok and I don't really recall what I answered. I do recall finally asking someone to stop and help me up and thankfully he did as I was still somehow attached to the bike. I didn't catch his name but I appreciate him stopping to assist me. I had overall pain in back and ribs like I'd been punched several times, but one particular sharp pain told me something was worse than a simple bruise. Finally started walking a bit with my bike trying to get out of the trail and after several minutes, Alex FINALLY caught up to me ( ;D ). Much like my ankle break in 2010, I ruined his race and made him stop to help me. Luckily we found one of the always helpful Markham Bike Patrol members who knew the quickest and safest way out of the trail and got us back to the car. Thanks to him as well! I settled in at the car, iced my back and decided I was ok go head home, but wanted to head to ER to get checked out.<br />
<br />
I'll spare the details and fast forward to the end result. CT Scan showed I have a small fracture of the Transverse Process in my lower back. Essentially, I dodged a real bullet to what could have been a much worse impact. Recovery is just letting it heal. I'm able to get around and really only dealing with pain in the process of sitting or standing up. It's a tough way to start the season, but at least I know the return to action was heading down the right path. Had some races planned in February at Amelia and Santos 6 Hour so we'll see how the healing goes. Either way, it's just a bump in the road, and having formally registered for ORAMM, there's no turning back! Down but not out, We'll see everyone soon!!<br />

So last I posted we were all set for a fun filled 2017 with tons of gravel and a return to XC. So what happened? Well a few weeks after that, a simple slip and fall pretty much derailed this year. What should have been a simple trip and fall getting out of my car, instead I found myself writhing in pain on the floor with a dislocated shoulder. I was fortunate enough to have it pop in to place on it's own in less than a minute, but the damage was done. Fast forward to a Dr's visit and it was confirmed, I had a 180 degree tear of the labrum (top to bottom) and would be going in for surgery.</div>

Surgery was successful and then came the hard part. First four weeks were no active mobility and absolutely ridiculous pain. I pretty much had to let my arm dangle or leave it in the sling no matter what I was doing. Only movement I had was at the hands of my Physical Therapist. After that was more active PT, again with more pain. You know, the kind that's so bad you actually start to laugh at how absurd you feel from the pain. A few months of that and there was progress, but scar tissue was limiting me. Jump to July for a follow up simple procedure where they knocked me under and essentially moved my arm in all directions to break though he scar tissue. Sounds painful but it really wasn't and totally had me down the home stretch in my recovery. </div>

Finally jump to today, for about 6 weeks I've been back on the bike trying to get some form of fitness and skill back. Alex has found his passion for the dirt again and the Boyco is ready for our latest big goal. So what's in store for 2018? Final details and schedule still in the works, but it all is preparation for one word, ORAMM! We'll be posting long rides, long races and lots of photos as we get ready for our most challenging event to date. It's been a rough year but looking forward to getting back in action! Stay tuned!</div>

While 2016 was pretty much a down year, 2017 has lots of fun in store and it starts with Gravel! <br />
<br />
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KBrW4X5PtoU/WDc6bcg0R7I/AAAAAAABLog/wK7Q2li57oIOgY0POTpve7YnKK0vR33RgCPcB/s1600/2016-11-24-065208-14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KBrW4X5PtoU/WDc6bcg0R7I/AAAAAAABLog/wK7Q2li57oIOgY0POTpve7YnKK0vR33RgCPcB/s320/2016-11-24-065208-14.jpg" width="320" /></a>That's right, the Gravel Bike bug has officially hit us. New bikes have been assembled (Stay tuned on details from our Twinsix Standard Rando & Niner RLT9 builds) and the fun and adventure aspect of cycling has been rekindled for us. Something about the simplicity of these heavy, fat tire, go anywhere road bikes, has brought back the joy of just hopping on a bike and seeing where you can go.<br />
<br />
There's quite possibly hundreds of newly discovered, to us, miles of dirt roads and bike trails throughout South Florida that don't stand out unless you look for them. Half the fun is mapping, the other half is venturing into the uncharted and hoping for the best!<br />
<br />
XC is still in our sights too, with Endurance events being the likely focus for 2017, but for the upcoming winter months, expect to see more, Gravel Grinders, dirt and randomness. Here's just some of what we've dubbed, the #UnnecessaryRide. Happy riding!<br />

Been a long, hot Summer of hard work, training and a little fun to boot, but ready or not, the 2015 FSC is here!<br />
<br />
Lots of changes went down over the Summer. We added some friends to the group, some guys still race, others just love cycling, but we're all friends so we still ride together as Eclipse Racing no matter what colors we wear on race day. Which leads me to yours truly, Eric G, and Boyco joining up with some of our old friends on Mack Cycle's new MTB team. <br />

The toughest part of the kickoff weekend is the long drive from South Florida to the State Capital in Tallahassee. We changed it up from our usual routine and actually left on Friday afternoon and it really paid off. Instead of arriving tired on Saturday mid day, we had a relaxing morning and hit the trails for some comfortable shakedown laps. This course is a nice mix of climbing and descents. After an opening double track climb, racers are kicked down the Cadillac section that's pretty much wide open bench cut single track, with some bumps and roots to keep your brakes from getting too bored. Throw in a few A & B lines and it's definitely a section to make some passes. Later on Walley World kicks the racers over a perfectly groomed double to hit a nice wooden wall that usually draws a crowd, encouraging the racers to "Get some wood!!" <br />

Race day weather was perfect and the races went off quickly. With so many of us in attendance, we'll pick a few random results to talk about. Vic started in his Elite class, a combined class of all Expert 19-49 races. While they'd also be scored in their respective classes, this is where you can find the fastest racers in Florida. After lap one he was mixed in with about the Top 11 riders which then started separating out. After three laps he was battling with another racer between 7th and 8th place. He managed to pull away from his chaser to end up in 7th on the day, and 4th in class, landing him in the always impressive 40-49 podium! The story of the day was Bob McCarty, who popped his chain coming out of the gate, Fixed it in a few minutes, and chased back to finish 5th on the day in the Elite division. No less impressive was Bob's teammate, Doug DeWeese, who took his first overall Elite victory on this day! <br />

<br />
Boyco set off in the XC2 19-29, 18 deep which includes contains some of the fastest junior racers in the state. Looks can certainly be deceiving with these kids! After the shuffle of the start, Boyco had just missed the lead group escape and was part of the a chase group. By lap two it was down to a trio and it became a strategy game. Evenly matched through most of the trail, Boyco snuck away with a small gap on the last twisty section to charge to the finish line ahead of the others for 8th place. <br />
<br />
As for me, well it started well at least. My XC2 30-39 class was a bit smaller than usual with only 9 racers. I stuck to the group early and tried not to do anything silly. I made a move to get into the Cadillac section first from the group I was with and it worked, so that was fun, but after that I got swarmed on a climb and got sent to the rear. I held everyone close for the better part of 2 laps until my old back issues kicked in and I fell off the pace. Kept it upright the rest of the way, didn't finish last and well, had some fun. The form isn't bad, but I can't shake this injury. <br />
<br />
As of this writing, FSC #2 in Jacksonville already passed and was a muddy mess! Elite winner on the day was Bob McCarty with our Vic Nelson grabbing 7th overall again in Elite and 3rd in class! FSC #3 is coming THIS weekend and we'll be at the always awesome Alafia River State Park for that one! Stay tuned for more pics and reports! Enjoy some of the pics below and thanks for following along!<br />

It's a long one so I'll get right to it!<br />
<br />
Last update I had Sea Otter coming up and it wound up being such an amazing adventure. Monster Energy hooked it up with 4 days accommodations in Monterrey, Ca just minutes from the Laguna Seca event location. The even itself is bigger than anything I could have imagined, estimating over 65,000 people in attendance over four days. Hundreds of Industry brands were on site bringing the latest & greatest of cycling products. Racing action was on for four days in everything from Road racing, 'Cross, Downhill and XC. The Pro races were absolutely amazing to see up close. The event has become big enough to bring the best of the UCI Professionals and we were treated with top international racers like Nino Schurter in action! I was provided with a sweet S-Works Epic to use for the trip which was perfect for the race course. I spent the better part of two days with a Monster Energy film crew and MotoCross/MTB Legend Johnny O'Mara exploring the filming, exploring the race loop and learning some skills from Johnny. Having never ridden out West, the terrain was quite different and Johnny definitely provided some useful tips. When race day came I managed to suffer like a dog for the early parts as the weather took an unexpected drop in temperature. Half way through I found my legs and had a better time out of it. Ultimately I kept it upright and had a blast in the beautiful race loop. Check out some pics below from my trip.<br />

Boyco has had his own busy Summer as well. When XC season ends, he likes to take his rides the endurance and Adventure route. His search of Epic rides has taken him to the muddy mess of the Big Frog 65, a 65 mile XC race in the mountains of Tennessee, to the more spiritually pure Renegade Run, a 90 mile NIGHT ride through the Ocala National Forest back in Florida. More of a Gravel Grinder than an XC event. The Summer isn't done yet as next up he continues to the leg ripping Oraam! With over 10k feet of climbing in the mountains of North Carolina, the ride has become a yearly challenge for him. The war stories when he returns are always special so looking forward to his report.<br />
<br />
This Summer brought some changes to the team as well. Our good friend Norris has left us for the great state of North Carolina. He'll always be a part of the team, but we'll miss him and his constant shenanigans on the bike. We continue with great support from F2 Performance Labs, ESI Grips, Cytomax, Magura, & Rudy Project., but after three great seasons with Bike Tech, we've stepped away as we've taken a bit of a change in direction with the team. We can't thank them enough for all their support along the way. Happy to report that Alex has reignited his passion for riding after a tough personal year, and we've included some new (old) friends from other teams to join us as well. While they'll fly their sponsor colors on race weekend, they're Eclipse Racing when it comes to race day fun and support.<br />

He's sponsored by Mack Cycles in Miami, Florida, but you need a lot of kits for 7 days so he managed to fly Eclipse colors a few times. He rode consistent the whole event, faced a bit of a challenge with a crash mid way through, but charged back to finish 19th in class! <br />
<br />
As the Summer ends, the focus will turn to the FSC/CC season which begins in September. We'll write up more of our new members as the season kicks off. Keep coming back for more pics and stories from the season!<br />

Boyco's been prepping for quite the endurance run in the next few weeks, he teamed up with his sister for this one. With the Hammerhead 50, Big Frog 65 and Marathon Nationals all lined up starting next weekend, it gave him the opportunity to take some long runs, then have her take a lap to give him a break. Meanwhile I changed my plans for this event. Just over three weeks ago I was given the amazing news I'd won a trip to Monterey, California for the Sea Otter classic thanks to a Monster Energy contest! My preparation has shifted back to XC since then, so I treated this like a hard training ride/race check and called it a day at the half way point.</div>
<br />
Results aren't posted yet but we had good times all around. We're all tuned up for the weeks to come. Stay tuned for our next few reports!! Enjoy some pics from the Markham 100<br />

Florida's Endurance events are already ramping up. The 12 Hours of Santos kicked it off last month and events will be in full swing in April with South Florida's Markham 100 followed by the well known Hammerhead 100 in Ocala. Many South Florida racers are taking it to the road after that to Tennessee for the NUE Cohutta 100 and even the USA Cycling Marathon MTB Nationals in Georgia. The event doesn't make it this far South normally so there's plenty of excitement coming out of Florida for it.<br />

</tbody></table>
For the types that prefer the adventure, plenty of Gravel Grinders are popping up. The 2nd installment of the Great Gator Gravel Grinder (The 4G) just passed and brought out a great turnout. Part Gravel Grinder, part scavenger hunt, riders are able to select from two distances and must collect wristbands along the way for a chance at the podium. While not an official race, there's prizes for the Top 3 finishers to successfully find all the wristbands on the course. Organizer Gary Mendenhall and his team do a great job of marking unique and often hidden trails all over South Florida near the Everglades, creating a truly unique event. Added this year was a Scavenger Hunt band, with a riddle for a clue and a small marker to mark its location. I was lucky enough to grab it this year and came away with a set of tires. It was a consolation prize for me as I just missed the podium, coming 4th place for the 2nd year in a row. Still a great event and looking forward to the 2016 4G! Check out some pics of the action below.<br />

May brings us the 6th Annual Fakawi 50, or the Largest MTB Group ride in Florida. A little further north in Weston, Florida, the route typically hits the levees and hidden roads on the edge of the Everglades. Those that live in the area know that it's typically in the middle of rainy season, which usually makes it quite the muddy mess! Its remote locations lends to its name, as in "Where the Fakawi?" This will be my first time tackling the event so looking forward to it!<br />
<br />
As for us, we'll be going through some changes for 2015. After three great years, we part way with Bike Tech as a title sponsor. They helped us step up our game and we truly appreciate everything we accomplished together. Our own Eric Norris is turning a new chapter of life and moving to North Carolina, and while he won't be with us, he'll always be part of the team. Our co-founder Alex Serrano is taking a step back from racing this year as well. Boyco and I will carry on and we'll add a couple of more friends to the team, but we'll be taking this as a step back to enjoy the more social aspects of riding. We'll still be at select races and events and posting pics and stories though so keep following along with us! We continue with great sponsors in F2 Performance Labs, ESI Grips, Cytomax, Rudy Project, and Magura. A few of us have even picked up support from clothing brand <a href="http://www.twinsix.com/" target="_blank">Twin Six</a>! We're waiting on our new Eclipse kits to arrive, but will be rocking the T6 Metal kit in the near future until then.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned and follow along. Cycling is in our blood and we're going to keep sharing our adventures with our friends!Eric Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11349216381888545992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916989703406329935.post-10300644882798117252015-02-17T08:22:00.000-05:002015-02-17T08:22:53.263-05:00The Coconut Cup Series is complete!Congratulations to Mike Boyco who finished the season strong with a victory and 2nd place in the last two rounds of the Coconut Cup.
